    to our dear friend
       Emily Graham...

who brought us all so much  joy and inspiration during the all too brief time we had together.
We hope this page introduces new fans to Emily's music as well as provides a glimpse into the person that we all still consider to  be the heart of  Buffalo Nickel.

"Hey Little Debbie, what's the big idea..." -
Emily Graham

Emily Graham was a charismatic, down-to-earth singer/songwriter; in the spirit of John Prine or Townes Van Zandt, who could make you laugh or cry with just a simple turn of phrase. She wrote and played music with the Mississippi based band Buffalo Nickel from 1999 until the time of her death in July of 2002. Graham, who grew up in Marty Stuart's hometown of Philidelphia, MS, truly lived for music. She enjoyed tremendous local success in the early 90's as part of the Indigo Girls inspired duo Watermelon Sugar. But it was later that she found her own unique voice as a songwriter while working at the Riverview Camp For Girls in north Alabama. As a guitar-toting counselor she quickly became a camp favorite with her spontaneous fireside songs that would recount the days events as easily as tell quirky stories about robot-kitties taking over the world. This off-the-cuff songwriting style, joined with her inherent talent and her unwavering devotion to Neil Young's music, helped to shape Graham into a strong, unique and prolific songwriter able to produce songs that could both entertain and cut to the quick. In 1999, she joined forces with friends and fellow songwriters Steve Deaton and Clinton Kirby to form Buffalo Nickel. With songs like "EL CAMINO," "MONKEY WRENCH" and the song that pays tribute to one of her favorite artists "LUCINDA WILLIAMS," Graham quickly became a standout songwriter, inspiring a small army of fans. With the addition of Brad Clark, Chris Clark and Elliott Crawford to the band, Graham and Buffalo Nickel enjoyed growing success, taking their honky-tonk meets rock-n-roll brand of music to New York, Austin and Nashville, garnering praise all along the way. Unfortunately, Buffalo Nickel's new success quickly turned bittersweet. Only days after receiving her own personal copy of Buffalo Nickel's much awaited first release, UP ON BLOCKS, Graham died in a car accident while driving back to the camp where she worked. Her death was devastating for the band and fans alike. It had been her endearing ability to make a room full of strangers suddenly feel like they were all part of a family that had made Emily and her music so loved. It was the loss of that unique experience that made it apparent to everyone that not only was a great songwriting talent lost that day but a truly unique and special person was lost as well.

With Emily' s spirit and love for music close to the heart of everything they do, Buffalo Nickel continue making music today. Recording previously unreleased Emily Graham songs alongside their other new songs, Buffalo Nickel released their second album Noise & Conversation in 2004 and is currently working on their third album which is certain to include more new material from Emily Graham. Buffalo Nickel and Emily Graham's music can currently be heard on XM Satellite Radio as well as on radio station playlists around the world.
